What is bronchitis?

Bronchitis is acute or chronic inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes. Bronchitis can inhibit the amount of oxygen and air flowing into the lungs, causing phlegm or heavy mucous to start forming in the airways. The balance 10% are often caused by bacteria such as pneumococcus or mycoplasma and short-term exposures to tobacco smoke, inhaled solvents or gastric reflux contents. Recovery from acute bronchitis usually caused no permanent damage.

What is chronic bronchitis?

Chronic bronchitis has a longer duration from a minimum of 3 months to as long as 2 continuous years with coughs occurring daily with sputum production. During the early stages, sufferers will often experience coughing in the morning only. However as the bronchitis progresses, the cough can persists the whole day. This type of chronic cough is also commonly known as the “smoker’s cough”.

Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may fluctuate from worse to better during different periods of the year. Causes of chronic bronchitis are most commonly due to cigarette smoking, dust, air pollution, toxic gases, industrial fumes or from continuous acute bronchitis attacks.
