Homeopathic Remedies for Chorea or Saint Vitus Dance

What is chorea?

Sydenham’s chorea,,also traditionally known as Saint Vitus Dance, is a disorder of the nervous system.  Other common names are chorea minor, rheumatic chorea or infectious chorea.  The word “chorea” is derived from the Greek word meaning dance.  This disease is often characterized by involuntary and rapid, irregular movements of the muscle groups primarily in the hands, feet and face, often being similar to piano playing or dancing.

Sydenham’s chorea may result form the following conditions:

  • Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus which is a childhood infection
  • Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) which can cause Sydenham’s chorea to occur in about 20-30% of ARF sufferers
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • A stroke or tumor that affects the caudate nucleus
  • Certain types of drugs, for example antipsychotic drugs

Sydenham’s chorea tends to affect those aged between 5 to 15 years and occurs in girls more commonly compared to boys.  The onset of this disease in adults is rather rare.  In fact, the adult cases are often associated with the exacerbation of chorea occurring after a Sydenham’s chorea during childhood. Sometimes this Sydenham’s chorea can occur due to an infrequent complication from pregnancy especially during the first 3 months.  Chorea occurring during pregnancy, called chorea gravidarum, usually disappears without any treatment very shortly after giving birth.
