Homeopathic Remedies for Colic

What is Colic?

A baby will cry for many reasons so how do you distinguish between the different cries to determine whether the baby is having a colic problem?  Colic is a condition when the baby is suffering from spasmodic pains in the stomach, flatulence and an abdomen distended like a drum. There are some general rules that you can actually follow to help you diagnose a colic case such as:

  • The baby is crying inconsolably for 3 -4 hours straight.
  • The crying spell last beyond 3 days per week.
  • The baby is between 3 weeks and 3 months old.
  • The baby’s fists are clench, knees pull up or stiffen and eyes are either open wide or tightly close.
  • The baby’s abdomen is distended and gas may be pass out through the rectum

Cause of colic

The basic cause of colic is still relatively unknown although most health professionals agree that the most likely causes may be:

  • A digestive disorder
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Milk allergy
  • Reflux
  • Periodic tension in the baby’s immature nervous system
  • Fatigue

The most important thing is for the parents to understand that colic is fairly common and will not cause any permanent harm to the baby.  In fact, this condition will occur most often in babies who are developing and growing well, and that the colic problem will most probably be gone by the time the baby reaches 3 months in age or even earlier.  Rest assured that colic will leave the baby none the worse for wear.

These are some home remedies to help a colicky baby:

  • Let the baby sleep in a quiet room as it was found that some colicky babies seem to feel better when leading quiet calm lives.
  • Handle the baby gently and slowly.
  • Talk to the baby softly.
  • Do not allow any visitors to get too close to the baby.
  • Do not tickle or roughhouse the baby in any way.
  • Avoid bringing the baby outside to noisy places.
  • Try to get the bubbles up after each feedings.  You can also try burping the baby a few times during feeding to avoid reflux problem and to minimize the pressure on the gastric.
  • During feeding, use a teat that can produce a medium flow and not too much free-flowing of milk.
  • In many cases, using a pacifier has been found to be the most effective.
  • Let the baby lie on their stomach, across the parents’ knees or on a hot water bottle.
  • Rub the back of the baby.

Homeopathic remedies are also highly recommended as they are safe and effective in treating a colicky baby.
